Versailles, Illinois, 1947, the oldest village in Brown County, founded in 1824. A view of “downtown” Versailles, showing the vintage automobiles and the dirty highway (Illinois Route 99). The Craven Cafe was still operating (until the mid-to-late 1950s), and note the Coca-Cola advertising on the side of the building. The photographer was James L. Davis, my Dad, who almost always kept a camera around his neck.
